Racing - Trent Walko Beaverun 7/8

Pittsburgh resident Trent Walko made the trip to the Wampum, PA Beaverun Motorsports Complex for the seventh and eight rounds of the Beaverun Karting Championship. Saturday's track conditions were good and Walko's times reflected his ability. Time Qualifying saw Walko push his kart to a 104.5 and was on pole by three tenths of a second. Thanks to a battle between the drivers in second and third Walko was able to drive to a sizeable lead and take the prefinal win. This allowed Walko to start Saturday's final event in the lead position. The main event, however, would not be won so easily. Leading until two laps to go Trent was unable to hold his challengers behind. Both the second and third place competitors managed to form a freight train and move passed Trent thus relegating him to the third position. One lap later Breyton Santee and then Leader Tyler Moneypenny made contact while Santee made the pass for the lead. Walko capitalized and took the second position. Despite leading the most Walko achieved the second position.

Sunday featured what were perhaps the best track conditions of the year. Temperatures were in the mid 80's and thanks to high kart counts the racing surface was beginning to rubber in nicely. In time qualifying Walko ran a smoking fast lap of 104.3, which is also the fastest cadet lap of the year. Clear of the second place nearly two tenths and the rest of the field by a half second Walko looked nearly unbeatable for the upcoming prefinal event. A change of strategy was discussed in the TWR (Trent Walko Racing) camp but was not needed. Walko dominated the prefinal, winning with large margin. Despite this Trent was cautious entering the main event. He was able to win the prefinal by a large margin the day before but only managed a second place finish in the final. This time Walko was determined to take the win. At the drop of the green the two closest competitors hung close. Walko strained to pull a lead but ran consistently within two tenths of his best lap! The experience of Trent and the TWR team showed as he broke the valuable Cadet draft and generated a sizable lead. At the checkers Trent took the win by over four seconds.

Trent had this to say after the race:

It was a really good weekend. I was constantly the fastest kart on the track. Saturday things just didn't work out in my favor but Sunday things went my way.

Trent will next visit New Castle Motorsports Park for the ultimate round of the 2008 WKA Manufacturers Cup event.
