Racing - Trent Walko Report
In just two weeks Trent Walko has traveled nearly a thousand miles and competed in four separate races. The Pittsburgh native started off his two-week tour at the New Castle, Indiana stationed New Castle Motorsports Park facility for the two ultimate rounds of the George Kugler Manufacturers Cup.
Saturday, the first day of racing for the Manufacturers Cup competitors featured 38 entries into the Cadet field. Early on Walko struggled to find the pace of the leaders but was still a strong competitor. In Saturdays time qualifying session Trent pushed the ill handling Birel racing cadet machine to a strong 15th position. The prefinal was a 6 lap battle for Trent. Unable to find a drafting partner Walko was forced to race for every position. The prefinal was a battle of futility as Trent failed to gain or lose any positions locking up the 15th starting position in the final. At the drop of the green he managed to pass a few competitors, however, the draft was a huge force on the expansive New Castle straightaway's and Trent's machine was down on power. Without a drafting partner Trent had his work cut out for him. At the end of the 12 lap final Trent battled his way to a 16th place finish.
On Sunday Walko was entered in the second round of the Cadet division as well as the weekends only event for the HPV Jr. Sportsman category. Walko's cadet adventures got off to a fast start. After the TWR (Trent Walko Racing) team reset his chassis back to Trent's normal settings Walko placed his number 91 cadet machine on outside pole. At the drop the green flag Walko took the prefinal lead. He led the entire first lap and half of the second. Then disaster struck! Walko and another competitor made contact removing Trent from the racing surface, which dropped him to the 30th position. Walko however was able to show his speed as he passed 5 drivers in the next four laps allowing him to start the final in the 25th position. Despite being disappointed with the 25th starting position Trent looked forward to the final event and the challenge it presented. Walko eased by seven competitors on the first lap alone. Every lap saw Trent pushing his number 91 machine through the field like a hot knife through butter. At the conclusion of the 12 lap final Walko had passed an amazing 16 competitors to finish 9th.
HPV Jr. Sportsman was not nearly as exciting as the Cadet final. On track contact in Friday's practice session seemingly damaged Trent's package and as a result he found getting up to speed rather difficult. After a dissatisfactory time qualifying session Walko found himself starting the prefinal in the 18th position. Still ailing from Fridays on track collision the number 91 never really found its stride. Completing the prefinal in the 23rd position the TWR team was dissatisfied and frustrated with the unknown problem that had plagued them since two days before. Ultimately, Walko decided it was best to garage the TWR machine and skip the HPV Jr. Sportsman event. Walko commented on his Man. Cup weekend,
"The first day was difficult. We struggled and didn't get any faster. The second day we were fast but didn't have luck."
Just one week after having competed at the George Kugler Manufacturers Event the TWR team made the trip to the Beaverun Motorsports Complex for the 9th round of the club championship. Time qualifying saw Walko tie his personal best and the unofficial lap record of 1 minute and 4.3 seconds while also taking the pole position by a large margin. The formidable Cadet draft would however allow his competition to hang close to Walko. Nevertheless, Walko led every prefinal lap and his competitors were never able to make a move on the Pittsburgh native. The draft again played a big part in final event. Unable to make a break from the pack Trent went ahead with a plan to allow his closest competitors to pass him. This moved Walko from first down to fifth. With only three laps to regain the lead Walko's strategy may have been ill timed. Soon some shuffling ahead allowed him to gain two spots, but just one lap later Walko fell another spot into fourth position. With just one lap to go the third place competitor was black-flagged which moved Walko into the third spot. The checker flew with Walko finishing third.
After the Beaverun event Trant had this to say,
"We were moving fast but didn't make the right decisions at the right point in the race and that may have cost us the win."
